STORY IN BRIEF
---------------------------
Indu (Manjari) is fond of music. Though her native place is Andhra Pradesh, her parents and other kin settled in Kerala. They do businesses like letting out house boats and treating patients with ayurvedic medicines. She falls in love with Chakri, who sings folk songs very well. However, Indu’s parents did not allow Chakri to marry her as he was poor. So, Chakri leaves Kerala and returns after six months. By that time, Indu’s engagement is taking place and Chakri exhibits the gold ornaments he collected for Indu and wins the hearts of all. Indu and Chakri get married and return to Andhra. Chakri conceals his profession even after marriage. At this juncture, Indu comes across Sivananda Murthy (Saratbabu) at the railway station and gets a feel that they bonded together with an unknown relationship.
However, he admits to Indu that all the ornaments were gold-coated. Again Indu and Chakri find Sivananda Murthy unconscious and takes him to his home and help him regain health. However, Chakri wants to throw him out by hook or crook as he is eating away their money as well as their enjoyment. Chakri convinces Sivananda Murthy to get out of his house. In a few days, Indu and Chakri get a call from Sivananda Murthy to visit their house. Chakri falls flat with the money and stature of Sivananda Murthy. There Indu finds that Sivananda Murthy’s granddaughter Sindhu (Manjari) is a look alike of her. Here comes the flashback only to find that Sindhu died due to injuries in an acid attack. When Sivananda Murthy wanted to adopt Indu as she was a look alike of Sindhu she refuses the offer and instead advise him to adopt a mentally-challenged boy, whom his granddaughter, adored. The film ends with Indu giving birth to a daughter.
PERFORMANCE:
---------------------------------------
Though the character of Allari Naresh was very haphazard, he did justice to his role. However, he did not get a chance to play a key role in the film and remained a second fiddle to the heroine. There is a confusion in the role played by Naresh and in fact he was portrayed like a character-less fellow, because he cheats his in-laws, cheats his wife by concealing his job, boasts of being a musician, he wants to throw away a guest from his house, he wants to grab the entire property after coming to know that his wife Indu is a look alike of Sindhu. One could not clearly explain what is the character as it had different shades. But, the real fact is that Allari Naresh did justice to his role. Manjari Phadnis got a meaty role in this film and it is really a great opportunity for any debutant heroine to work with a great director like Viswanath. She got a scope to show her dancing skills and performance in this film. She played two characters as Indu and Sindhu. While Indu is quite traditional, Sindhu is a versatile girl, who is good at education, morality and modern thoughts, helping nature. Saratbabu is an asset for the film. Especially, the way he emoted the emotional scenes is quite impressive. His reaction to Naresh’s behaviour are awesome. He is so kind towards Naresh, and despite his misbehaviour, he ignores it because of the goodness of Indu. Though there are several artistes they don’t need a mention as they just come and go.
TECHNICAL:
---------------------------------------
The director ignored the entertainment part in the film and though there are a whole lot of comedians they remained waste and the director failed to utilise any of them for evoking comedy. Most of the film was shot in beautiful locales of Alappuzha in Kerala and the remaining part on the banks river Godavari. The cinematographer Venugopal should be commended for capturing the beauty of Kerala with his camera. Editing is also okay. Picturisation of songs is excellent and the Balu-Naresh jugalbandi gets instant applause. Poor characterisation of the hero, no worthy story and unimpressive narration here and there may play a spoilsport. The film as a whole appears good to watch but the twists in the film embarrasses the audiences.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MOVIE
--------------------------------------------
1) Heroine Manjari and Sarath Babu's performance
2) Locations
3) Cinematography
4) Basic story
REMARKS:
---------------------------------------
When a film is coming in the direction of Viswanath, there will be lots of expectations. The storyline chosen by the director is good as it has several delicate issues in our regular family lives. The way he portrayed the relationship between the character is trustworthy but the film has to pay the price for degradation of Naresh’s character. A film that could be watched once because it is from Viswanath. Manjari Phadnis’ glamour and performance is an added attraction.

very happy to see k.viswanaths movie again and very good movie ..every one should see this movie
Indu (Manjari Phadnis) has an ear for music. A Brahmin from Kerala she falls in love with Chakri (Allari Naresh) who sings lovely folk songs. He keeps his profession a secret in order to win over her family. On the way home after the wedding Indu bumps into an old man played by Sarath Babu and gets into an animated conversation for a brief period and he likes her instantly. Infact after sometime Indu brings him home and nurses him to health after he is found lying unconscious on the road. The couple are surprised when they are invited to his palatial home and when Sarath Babu expresses his desire to adopt Indu. Indu declines the offer politely and inturn makes Sarath Babu adopt a mentally deranged youth who has an integral role to play in the film. What happens in the second part of the film forms the crux of the story.
Subhapradam is set in the picturesque locations of Alappuzha in Kerala and you get to watch more than what one saw in Ye Maaya Chesave. All the songs are beautifully choreographed picturised and Manjari Phadnis gets an ample scope to show her versatility. Very expressive in dance and dialogue, she dominates the show. She also gets to play a double role of Indu and Sindu both as a traditional Brahmin girl well versed in dance and music and as a contemporary women, educated, independent, an allrounder and a beautiful, sensitive human being.
However the prime character Indu overshadows Chakri. Naresh has nothing much to do, he plays second fiddle to her and fails to make an impact. His character doesn't run evenly, it is erratic at times. Once he is shown as behaving in a particular manner because of a compulsion but later again he is shown as getting a bit greedy. Somehow his character is etched in a haphazard manner and you are left wondering what he is all about. He appears content letting the leading lady take over the show and keeps moulding his behaviour and character accordingly. He might have been roped in after his convincing performance in the tailor made role in Seema Sastry and a few other films. Here he is misfit.
Indu's family look strange, the men are bald in some scenes and in others they appear with ungainly wigs. The women in the household are either very tall or very short. The backdrop if it had been set in an authentic Andhra setting, would have lent credence to the story. Just to show Manjari's multi-faceted and multi-linguistic personality, the uncles and aunts have been added but they ended as extra baggage, not adding any value to the story. Also there is no entertainment, the conversation between Dharmavarapu and Naresh drags and bores. The story comes to life only towards the end of the film when a social issue is brought to the fore. The climax song is very pleasing and good.
What one notices in this entire drama is the good aspects in a human are highlighted, the negativity in the form of Allari Naresh is underplayed. Sarath Babu's reactions to Naresh's behaviour is praiseworthy, he is not hurt by Naresh's attitude, and all he sees is the goodness in Indu and revels in the happiness he gets from seeing her. Even after decades on screen, Sarath Babu glows and radiates. All the songs are lovely and Mouname Chebutondi is very nice to hear and watch on screen.
An admirable job by Manjari Phadnis but the story fails to make an impact. The issue which has been highlighted in the film is not path-breaking, more gruesome forms have been shown on the celluloid. Also the story, the setting, the subject is clichéd. It is a noble effort but nobody gains except Manjari Phadnis. It is simply her show which demonstrates her character's greatness, selflessness and goodness! Finally, the renowned director K. Viswanath proves yet again that he is still the master in bringing out good music and dance but the same can't be said about the story here, it is just not in tune with the times. Subhapradam is an assembling of lovely song and dance without a proper story structure.
