Spanish giants Real Madrid announced on Wednesday the sacking of coach Manuel Pellegrini — and the appointment of European champions’ Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho to replace him.
The announcement was made at a packed press conference by Real president Florentino Perez, who thanked Pellegrini for his “professionalism and impeccable effort.”
Pellegrini failed to win anything in his only season in Madrid, despite having the most expensive team in the world at his disposal.
The whites finished second in La Liga behind Barcelona — though they did amass a club record of 96 points — and flopped in the Champions league and the Spanish cup.
Mourinho — who on Saturday guided Inter Milan to Champions League triumph — will sign a four-year contract with Real.
According to Spanish media sources, the Portuguese coach will enjoy an annual salary of around 10 million euros (12.26 million dollars), about the same as he was earning in Milan.
Perez said that Mourinho will have to “resolve his contractual situation at Inter” before taking charge in Madrid.
He added that “they time has come to give a push to our new project.”
