Sensex dips below 18,000 points in opening trade
The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell over 155 points to trade below the 18,000 level in opening trade on Thursday, on sustained selling by funds in line with a weak global trend.
The 30-share index, which had lost about 149 points in the previous session, fell by another 155.41 points or 0.86 per cent to 17,914.78 points, with all the sectoral indices led by metal, IT and realty trading in negative zone with losses up to 1.36 per cent.
The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty breached a psychological 5,400 level to trade lower by 48.15 points to 5,372.45 points.
Traders said the selling pressure was sparked by a plunge in world markets on investor worries over fears of a global economic slowdown, led by the United States and China.
Besides, weak opening in Asian stock markets, which were down up to 2.02 per cent in the morning trade today, also dampened the sentiments here, they added.
Meanwhile, the US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 2.49 per cent lower in the previous session.
IOC net rises to Rs. 10,220 cr
Indian Oil Corporation on Friday reported more than three-fold increase in its net profit in 2009-10, even though the oil marketing company is losing Rs.105 crore in revenues everyday on selling fuel below cost.
It is also planning to revive projects that it had put on the backburner due to cash crunch earlier.
The IOC board has proposed Rs.13 per share dividend for 2009-10.
In the fiscal ended 2010, the corporation's net profit stood at Rs.10,220.55 crore against Rs.2,949.55 crore in the previous year, though sales dipped by 5.1 per cent to over Rs.2.49-lakh crore.
Inventory gains
“The higher profitability in 2009-10 was because of Rs.2,541 crore from inventory gains, Rs.446 crore in lower interest cost and Rs.940 crore in foreign exchange gains,” IOC Chairman B. M. Bansal told journalists here.
He said IOC planned to spend Rs.13,000 crore in Plan and Rs.2,000 crore in non-Plan expenditure in the current fiscal.
IOC had invested Rs.12,256 crore last fiscal, mostly on refinery upgradation.
“Financially, we are in a better position now and so we are re-examining projects in hand and prioritising them. We had kept the petrochemical project at Paradip in Orissa on the hold…now with better prices, we have to take a decision when we have to start the project again,” Mr. Bansal said.
The petrochemical project will cost Rs.22,300 crore.
He also said IOC was doing a detailed feasibility report (DFR) for setting up an LNG import terminal at Ennore near Chennai.
Rupee weakens by 14 paise against dollar in early trade
The Indian rupee depreciated by 14 paise to 46.49 a dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today on month-end demand for the U.S. currency from importers.
However, higher opening on the stock markets and firming Asian currencies against the dollar, capped rupee’s losses.
The rupee had ended higher by 94 paise, or 2 per cent, at 46.35/36 a dollar in the previous session on Friday on the back of continued rally in equities and the U.S. currency weakening in overseas markets.
Forex dealers said the month-end demand for the dollar from importers, mainly weighed on the rupee sentiment.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, rose by 57.89 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 16,920.95 points in opening trade today.
Gold futures down on profit taking, strong dollar
Gold futures traded Rs. 71, or 0.38 per cent lower at Rs. 18,394 per ten gram, as traders booked profits amid higher dollar.
Weak trend in the other Asian markets also put some pressure.
All the three running contracts -June, August and October-were trading in negative zone with losses up to 0.38 per cent.
At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in June contract traded Rs. 71, or 0.38 per cent down at Rs. 18,394 per ten gram, with a turnover of 968 lots. It ended 0.20 per cent higher at Rs. 18,465 per ten gram in the previous session.
Similarly, the metal for delivery in August contract fell by Rs. 68, or 0.37 per cent at Rs. 18,400 per ten gram, with a turnover of 1,045 lots, while delivery in October contract drifted by Rs. 67, or 0.36 per cent to Rs. 18,455 per ten gram, clocking a turnover of 29 lots.
Analysts said trading sentiment turned bearish after the U.S. dollar strengthened, reducing the gold’s appeal as an alternative investment.
Besides, profit taking at prevailing higher prices by speculators and closure of US markets on account of ‘Memorial Day’ also put pressure on the gold prices at futures market here, they added.
Memorial Day is a US federal holiday observed in remembrance of the nation’s soldiers on the last Monday of May.
Meanwhile, gold dropped 0.08 per cent, to $ 1,213.30 an ounce in the Asian region.
Sensex rises 58 points in opening trade on funds buying
The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today rose by almost 58 points in opening trade on buying by funds and retail investors.
The 30-share index, which surged by over 841 points in the previous three sessions, gathered another 57.89 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 16,920.95 points.
Auto, metals and oil and gas sector stocks led the gains.
The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also rose by 15.60 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 5,082.15 points.
Brokers said positive trend in Asian markets and strong corporate earnings, mainly triggered buying by foreign funds on the domestic bourses.
Among auto stocks Tata Motors, the country’s largest auto company, gained 1.23 per cent to Rs. 757.20, Mahindra and Mahindra was up 2.93 per cent to Rs. 561 and Maruti Suzuki rose by 0.89 per cent to Rs. 1,234.
Infra major Jaiprakash Associates traded Rs. 2.48 per cent higher at Rs. 130 after company reported a 166 per cent jump in consolidated net profit to Rs. 1,119.18 crore for the fiscal ended March 31, 2010.
Tata Power gained 0.30 per cent to Rs. 1,275.50, ONGC was up 2.06 per cent to Rs. 1,154.25 and Bharti Airtel rose 0.38 per cent to Rs. 261.90.
