Germany coach Joachim Loew has not confirmed reports he has made Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm captain of the national team to replace the injured Michael Ballack.
A German football federation DFB spokesman said on Thursday there had been no talks with the players on either the captaincy or the position of goalkeeper.
Loew will announce his new captain on Friday, a day before Germany play Hungary in a friendly international in Budapest, DFB media director Harald Stenger said.
Bild newspaper reported on Thursday that Loew has decided to make Lahm skipper and Schalke’s Manuel Neuer his first-choice keeper going into the World Cup.
But Stenger described the report as “pure speculation.” Lahm, 26, who is vice-captain at Bayern, joined up with the squad in Appiano, northern Italy on Wednesday following the German side’s Champions League defeat to Inter Milan in Madrid on Saturday.
